The Inspiration for “Buddy”

Because of what I had seen on TV and heard from others, I grew up very fearful of pit bulls. Over time, I eventually became comfortable around my friend Freddy’s pit bull Chico, who later had puppies. I decided to conquer my fears and took home a beautiful fawn colored pup we named Buddy (see photo on left). Buddy brought out a love inside of me I had yet to experience and I realized – bad dogs are made, not born.
A few years later Chico got loose and was fatally shot by a local shop owner – right in front of Freddy’s young sister. The dog wasn’t being aggressive, he was just barking at a squirrel. Despite the fact Chico was shot from behind in broad daylight there was no police investigation. All they needed to know was Chico was a pit bull – case closed.
The heartache of my friend’s family cut deep, and Buddy felt it too. Such an unimaginable tragedy could happen to anyone, it could happen to me. My love for Buddy inspired me to act, to make a difference, but how? At the root of the problem is the perception of pit bulls, so how can I change the perception!?
As a Producer, I knew firsthand the power media has to influence perspectives and change perceptions – so I developed Buddy & Oscar. After years of pitching the show around town and getting turned down I decided to release Buddy & Oscar online and get the message out there.
I hope you enjoy the show 🙂
